The moment we hit rock bottom
Some people have hit rock bottom before. They remember the exact moment their lives spiraled so quickly out of control and how they were forced to grasp any part of their remaining sanity as it all slipped away. For others, they've been stuck on the bottom for quite some time now. Regardless of how we came to be on the bottom it all looks the same in the end: searching for a rope, a jacket, a hand, ANYTHING to pull ourselves to the surface and remember what it's like to breathe. But nothing ever comes.
The truth is, life doesn’t give out ropes, throw you jackets, or offer you hand.
Life can be cruel. Life doesn’t care if you’re mentally ill, chronically sick, struggling financially, dealing with death, or at the most difficult point in your life.
Life just doesn’t care.
So we put our happiness in the hands of others hoping they have the strength, the capability, to pull us off the bottom and for a moment we think we’ve been saved. We believe we have finally reached the light at the end of a very long tunnel.
But the problem with allowing others to hold your happiness is they can drop it at any time. And they will. They always do.
So as you lay at rock bottom, looking for a reason or person to give you the strength to rise to the surface, know it’s not coming. It won’t come.
The only person who can pull you off the bottom is you.
So stop waiting for life to give you a sign. Stop waiting for life to ease up. Stop waiting for a life jacket to be thrown.
Help is not coming.
Search for the stairs to the top and lift your damn leg. Step by step, carry yourself until you remember how beautiful it is to breathe again. Find it within you; the fight, the strength, the last inkling of hope you have, and climb. Let people help, holding your hand along the way, but remember if they let go you can still stand on your own.
You are the only person that can pick yourself off the bottom, so stop searching for others and invest in you. Save yourself.
